Prescription Drug Ingredients Found In Recalled Chocolate Products

A voluntary nationwide recall has been issued for two chocolate products sold online after federal health officials discovered they contain undeclared prescription drug ingredients that could cause dangerous, potentially fatal drops in blood pressure.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), California-based Gear Isle is voluntarily recalling certain units of its ‘Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Sachet’ and ‘ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Boosters’ after lab testing found the products contain sildenafil and tadalafil, the active ingredients in prescription erectile dysfunction medications like Viagra. Neither drug was listed on the product labels.

The products were marketed as dietary supplements and sold online across the country.

The FDA warns that sildenafil and tadalafil can be especially dangerous for people who take nitrate medications for heart conditions. When those drugs are combined, blood pressure can drop suddenly and severely. According to the FDA’s announcement, “Among the adult male population who are most likely to use these products, adult males who use nitrates for cardiac conditions are most at risk from these products.”

The agency describes the potential reaction as “life-threatening.”

Gear Isle has said it has not received any reports of adverse events tied to the recalled products. Consumers who purchased either item are urged to stop using them immediately and return them for a full refund. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the products should contact a healthcare provider right away.
