Santa Ana Winds, Warm Weather Continue Across Southland

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Unseasonably warm weather persisted across the Southland Wednesday and forecasters said the conditions will likely continue into the weekend, aided by Santa Ana winds.

Wind advisories that had been set to expire Wednesday afternoon were extended until 2 p.m. Thursday for the Santa Clarita Valley, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Golden State (5) and Antelope Valley (14) freeway corridors.

Forecasters said wind gusts of up to 50 mph were possible in the affected areas, continuing the risk of downed tree limbs and power lines.

“Our traditional mid-January warm spell continues as high pressure sits over the West coast,” according to the National Weather Service. “… Locally gusty northeast winds will develop at times, strongest in the overnight and morning hours with some advisory level winds at times. A cooling trend will begin in the next couple days but above normal temperatures are expected well into next week.”

Wednesday was predicted to be the warmest day of the week, with valley and coastal areas away from the beaches reaching into the low 80s, and areas closer to the shore reaching the upper 70s, forecasters said. Those temperatures are roughly 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

Although the winds were expected to die down after Thursday, the warm weather should persist, although slightly cooler than Wednesday. Forecasters said temperatures will slowly fall through the weekend and into early next week, with coastal and valley areas dropping into the upper 60s to mid 70s by Tuesday — cooler but still 4 to 8 degrees above normal.
