Bars in Long Beach’s Belmont Shore neighborhood will close at midnight for the next month due to public safety concerns. This decision follows a deadly shooting two weeks ago, where 32-year-old Jeremy Spears was killed after an altercation at a local bar. Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the need for safety, stating, “The growing disorder and unsafe behavior linked to certain late-night establishments is unacceptable and will not be ignored.”
The Long Beach City Council discussed this temporary curfew as part of broader measures to address rising violence in the area. According to KTLA, the council also considered increasing police presence and other safety strategies. Councilmember Kristina Duggan, who represents the area, proposed the curfew to reassess security and enforcement measures.
Belmont Shore, known for its vibrant nightlife, has seen an increase in unwanted behavior, including public drinking and violence. Press Telegram reported that the area has experienced multiple violent incidents, prompting residents to call for action. The city plans to explore additional measures, such as DUI enforcement and targeted nuisance issue crackdowns, to ensure a safer environment.
