Authorities have learned new details about an American woman who was found chained to a tree in a dense forest in India. When 50-year-old Lalita Kayi Kumar was taken to the hospital, she wrote a note detailing how her husband chained her to the tree and left her to die. She claimed she survived for 40 days before a local shepherd heard her cries for help.
However, Kumar, who is receiving treatment in a psychiatric facility, is now recanting her story. She told police that she was suffering from hallucinations when she gave her initial statement. Kumar then admitted she was not married and said that she chained herself to the tree after her visa expired and she was nearly out of money.
Dr. Sanghamitra Phule, superintendent of the psychiatric hospital, told the BBC that Kumar’s condition is improving.
“She eats, walks, and also exercises. She is under treatment, and we are also giving her some nutrients that her body was lacking,” he explained.
Dr. Phule said that officials located her family in the United States and that she has been in touch with them.
