Suspect Charged with Murder in Deputy’s Death

Prosecutors have filed 10 charges against Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, for the murder of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez during a domestic violence call in Rancho Cucamonga.

Deputy Nunez was shot on October 27 while responding to a call involving Saldivar and his ex-spouse. After the shooting, Saldivar led police on a high-speed motorcycle chase on the 210 Freeway, reaching speeds of nearly 150 mph before crashing into a vehicle.

Saldivar faces charges including murder, attempted kidnapping, and assault with a semiautomatic firearm. Special circumstances include the murder of a peace officer in the line of duty, which could result in life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

Deputy Nunez, who had served for six years, leaves behind a pregnant wife and a young daughter. The chase ended when an off-duty deputy, who was driving a Toyota Camry, deliberately swerved into Saldivar’s path to stop him. Experts believe the deputy’s actions were justified due to the threat posed by Saldivar, who had already shot an officer.

The San Bernardino County community has been mourning the loss of Deputy Nunez, with law enforcement and firefighters gathering to honor him as his body was transported to the coroner’s office. Sheriff Shannon Dicus expressed sorrow over the incident, noting the frequency of such tragedies within the department.

The off-duty deputy’s intervention in the chase is under review, but experts predict it will be deemed within policy. The case highlights the risks officers face and the split-second decisions required in high-stakes situations.
