Pasadena Selling Former Caltrans Homes Along 710 Corridor

The city of Pasadena is selling more than a dozen historic homes that were once slated for demolition as part of the failed 710 Freeway extension project. These properties, which have been vacant for decades, are being sold as-is, with prices ranging from $750,000 to $1.75 million. Some of the homes are uninhabitable due to health and safety concerns, and utilities will remain off until after escrow closes, according to LAist.

Despite their condition, the homes have attracted multiple offers. Pasadena Housing Director Jim Wong stated that proceeds from the sales will be directed towards affordable housing projects in the city, addressing a critical shortage. The properties were originally purchased by Caltrans for a freeway extension that never materialized due to legal challenges and opposition.

The sale process is unique, with no public open houses allowed. Potential buyers must prove they can cover the full price and sign liability waivers to view the properties. The Pasadena City Council will review offers before notifying successful bidders.

The sales are part of a broader effort by Caltrans to sell properties along the SR-710 corridor, with a focus on affordable housing. The city aims to fund three affordable units for each property sold, generating at least 51 units from the current sales, as noted by Caltrans.
