Katie Porter Speaks Out About Viral Videos, Acknowledges Mistakes

California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter admitted she “could have handled things better” in two viral videos showing tense interactions with a journalist and a staffer. In an interview on Nexstar’s “Inside California Politics” on Tuesday, Porter expressed regret over her actions and confirmed she apologized directly to the staffer involved.

The videos, which have stirred controversy, show Porter threatening to walk out of an interview with a CBS reporter and shouting at a staffer during a Zoom call in 2021. These incidents have raised questions about her temperament for the governor’s role. Porter, however, emphasized her commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “I’m taking responsibility for the situation and I’m also not going to back down from fighting back for California.”

Porter’s opponents have seized on the videos to question her readiness for office. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa released a campaign ad criticizing her response to the journalist’s questions. Despite the backlash, Porter remains focused on her campaign, aiming to earn voters’ trust and support. In a recent interview with KTLA, she acknowledged the criticism but insisted her passion and defiance are strengths, not weaknesses.

Porter, who served in Congress from 2019 to 2025, is currently leading the gubernatorial race, according to a September poll by Emerson College. However, no new polling data has been released since the videos surfaced. As the race continues, Porter aims to demonstrate her capability to handle tough questions and lead California effectively.
