LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles city, county and federal government offices will be closed Monday for Indigenous Peoples Day and the Columbus Day holiday.
While the city and county of Los Angeles observe Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October annually, the federal government has made a point this year of declaring it Columbus Day. Federal offices and courts will also be closed.
But the state of California does not observe Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples Day as a state holiday, so criminal and civil courts will remain open on seemingly limited schedules. Schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District will also be open.
The U.S. Postal Service does not deliver regular mail on the holiday, and post offices will be closed.
Buses, rail services, and Metrolink trains in Los Angeles run on a regular schedule.
The holiday was first officially celebrated in L.A. in 2018, after the City Council and L.A. County Board of Supervisors voted to replace Columbus Day. More than 100 cities around the country have opted to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day over Columbus Day.
This year’s Indigenous Peoples Day events feature a range of activities, including:
