El Monte Police Upgrade Gear, Hire More Officers

The El Monte Police Department is enhancing its operations by investing in new equipment and expanding its workforce. The department has acquired a fleet of drones to assess situations before officers arrive, providing real-time information to aid in planning. Additionally, several vehicles have been bulletproofed to reduce officer anxiety during operations, as noted by Detective Clayton Duran. This move comes just over three years after two officers were tragically killed in an ambush while responding to a domestic violence call at a motel.

The department has also invested in a new armored vehicle and a directional speaker that projects clear commands to specific targets, such as doors or windows, from a distance of up to 150 yards. Lieutenant Mark Snook explained the advantages of this technology, emphasizing its role in enhancing communication during critical situations.

To support the physical well-being of officers, the department now employs an athletic trainer to help prevent and recover from injuries. Funding for these upgrades comes from tax dollars and grant money, according to the city manager.

In addition to equipment upgrades, the El Monte Police Department is actively recruiting new officers, with plans to add at least 17 to its ranks. Chief Jake Fisher stated that they are looking for candidates from diverse backgrounds, particularly those with connections to the community, although this is not a requirement. More information about applying can be found on the department’s website.
