Californians Are Flocking to Texas, Colorado, and Tennessee

A recent U-Haul report reveals that many Californians are relocating to cities in Texas, Colorado, and Tennessee. According to the 2025 Midyear Migration Trends report, based on one-way truck rentals, the most popular destinations for those leaving California include the Houston, Denver, and Las Vegas metropolitan areas.

The data shows that Californians are the top transplants for U-Haul customers arriving in Austin and rank second for new residents in San Antonio. The report also highlights that while many are leaving, a significant number of residents are simply moving within California. Popular destinations within the state include Riverside, the Bay Area, San Diego, Sacramento, and Bakersfield.

Conversely, people moving to California most commonly come from Arizona, Nevada, and Texas. The report, which analyzed moves from January through July 2025, indicates a shift back to larger metro areas, reversing the trend of moving to less crowded markets during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As reported by The Sacramento Bee, nearly half of all U.S. moves occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This trend is evident in the robust inflow of U-Haul equipment into major cities and their expanding suburbs. The U-Haul report provides a snapshot of the ongoing migration patterns affecting California and other parts of the country.
