Gov. Newsom and President Trump Face Off In Court Over National Guard in LA

A federal appeals court will hear arguments today to decide if President Donald Trump can maintain control over California’s National Guard in Los Angeles. The hearing, conducted by a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, comes amid ongoing protests against immigration raids in the city.

The legal dispute began when President Trump deployed National Guard troops to support immigration enforcement agents and manage protests in Los Angeles. California Governor Gavin Newsom opposed this move, arguing that the President did not have the authority to federalize the state’s National Guard without his consent. Last week, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer issued a temporary restraining order, stating that President Trump’s actions were illegal and violated the Tenth Amendment. Judge Breyer emphasized that the President exceeded his statutory authority and ordered the return of control over the National Guard to Governor Newsom.

However, the Trump administration appealed the decision, and the Ninth Circuit issued an administrative stay, allowing the federal deployment to continue temporarily. The panel, consisting of two judges appointed by President Trump and one by former President Joe Biden, will now review the case to determine the legality of the President’s actions.

The outcome of this hearing could have significant implications for the balance of power between state and federal authorities. Local organizers have vowed to continue their protests, although demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles have quieted since the weekend.
