Austin, Texas, is engulfed in rumors of a potential serial killer after authorities discovered 38 bodies in and around Lady Bird Lake over the past three years. The local community is on edge as the majority of these cases have been attributed to accidental drownings, suicides, drug overdoses, and natural causes. However, one case has been classified as a murder, and about half a dozen remain unexplained.
According to Metro, the rumors have been fueled by the recent discovery of a teenage boy’s body, found by a paddleboarder near Riverside Drive and South Lamar. The Austin Police Department (APD) stated that the teenager, who was not wearing a life jacket, likely drowned after stepping off an underwater shelf in the lake. His kayak, backpack, and life jacket were later found nearby.
Despite the growing concerns, Austin police have denied the existence of a serial killer, dismissing the rumors of the so-called “Rainy Street Ripper.” They suggest that the city’s lively downtown party scene might contribute to the incidents. Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir on the Colorado River, was created in 1960 and is now used for recreation and flood control.
As the investigation continues, the APD is working to identify the unknown causes of several deaths and reassure the public of their safety.
