Menendez Brothers’ Parole Hearing Delayed to August

The parole hearing for Erik and Lyle Menendez, originally scheduled for June 13, has been postponed to August 21 and 22, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The reason for the delay remains unclear. The brothers, convicted in 1996 for the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills, recently became eligible for parole after a Los Angeles judge reduced their sentences from life without parole to 50 years to life. This change in their sentencing has expedited the parole process.

Even if the parole board grants parole, California Governor Gavin Newsom will have the final say in approving or denying it. The Menendez brothers have consistently maintained that they acted in self-defense due to years of abuse by their father.

The rescheduled hearing will be a significant step in determining the future of the brothers, who have spent decades in prison. As the new dates approach, the case continues to draw public interest, given its high-profile nature and the ongoing debate over the brothers’ claims of self-defense.
