Woodland Hills Man Accused of Starting Fire with Flare Gun

Residents of Woodland Hills are on edge after a man allegedly used a flare gun to start a fire and disrupted the peace with late-night disturbances.

Neighbors reported that the man has been acting erratically since March, often screaming obscenities and racial slurs into the early morning hours. Many residents, living in townhomes above Ventura Boulevard, have chosen to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation.

The situation escalated when the man was reportedly seen with a “flamethrower”-like device, prompting neighbors to take action. According to HuffPost, neighbors detained the suspect until police arrived, conducting a citizen’s arrest using zip ties and ropes. The man was taken into custody for a felony probation violation, but there was insufficient evidence to charge him with arson.

Actor Brian J. White, known for his roles in ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘Ghost Whisperer’, was among those who helped subdue the suspect. White described the tense situation, stating, “My first thought was, whatever’s going on out there, it’s not going to affect my wife and my daughter.” He joined his neighbors in confronting the man after hearing screams outside his home. White recounted how they managed to detain the suspect until police arrived, emphasizing the importance of community action in ensuring safety.

The incident has galvanized the neighborhood, leading to the formation of a watch group with regular patrols. White noted, “This experience has strengthened our bond as a community.” Despite the media attention, he stressed that their actions were motivated by a desire to protect their families and community.

As the investigation continues, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Topanga Division, which serves Woodland Hills, is working with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to gather more information.
