Multiple Hikers Killed By Volcanic Eruption On Remote Island

An eruption of Mount Dukono on Halmahera island, Indonesia, killed three hikers on Friday (May 8), according to authorities. A group of 20 climbers attempted to hike the nearly 4,450-foot volcano despite official safety warnings and a climbing ban issued by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) since December 2024.

The eruption occurred at 7:41 a.m. local time, sending a plume of ash over six miles into the sky. According to BBC News, two Singaporean men, aged 30 and 27, and one Indonesian woman from Ternate were killed. The rest of the group was evacuated by rescuers, although the bodies of those who died remain on the volcano due to ongoing eruptions and hazardous conditions. Several hikers were injured and transported to hospitals, while authorities searched for additional people who may have also been on the mountain.

Rescue operations were paused as night fell on Friday and are expected to resume Saturday. Two porters from the original group stayed on the mountain to assist search teams as reported by CNN.

Officials explained that warnings against climbing Mount Dukono were distributed on social media and posted at trail entrances, but the hikers ignored the restrictions.

Mount Dukono has been one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupting nearly 200 times since late March. The volcano is currently at level two on Indonesia’s four-tier alert system, signaling increased activity and danger within a 2.5-mile radius. Authorities have warned of ongoing risks, including volcanic mudflows and ashfall that could affect nearby communities.

Local officials and disaster experts have urged the public to heed safety advisories and avoid restricted zones on the mountain. The Indonesian government is investigating possible negligence by tourism operators or individuals who allowed or encouraged hiking despite the ban. Monitoring of Mount Dukono continues, and residents and visitors are advised to remain cautious and follow all official guidance as rescue and recovery efforts proceed.
