Two people have died and several others were shot after a planned fight between juveniles escalated into gunfire at Leinbach Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Monday (April 20).
According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the violence broke out just before 10 a.m. when a confrontation between two young people led to “multiple individuals” opening fire. The park is located next to Jefferson Middle School, in a residential area northwest of downtown Winston-Salem.
Assistant Chief Jason Swaim of the Winston-Salem Police Department said that the incident began as a planned fight between two juveniles. During the altercation, a firearm was discharged, resulting in several people being shot. Swaim explained, “Authorities have identified numerous people involved, but are still determining if they were suspects, victims, or witnesses.”
The exact number of victims is still unclear, but officials confirmed that some of those involved are juveniles. Nearby schools, including Jefferson Middle School, were briefly locked down as a precaution, but police stated that the schools were safe and parents could pick up their children if needed.
Several roads around the park were closed while law enforcement investigated. Police described the event as an isolated incident and said the investigation is ongoing to determine the roles of everyone involved.
Authorities have not yet released the identities or ages of the victims.
