Trump’s Arch Design Clears Key Approval Hurdle

President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch design has taken a significant step forward after the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved a modified version of the plan on Thursday (May 21). The 250-foot structure, which Trump has compared to Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, is intended to be “even more beautiful” than its French counterpart.

The approval by the Commission of Fine Arts, a federal agency responsible for advising on the aesthetics of construction in Washington, D.C., was expected. President Trump had previously appointed seven new members to the commission after dismissing the previous members. The proposed arch, designed by Harrison Design, features eagles and a winged figure reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty, with inscriptions reading “One Nation Under God” and “With Liberty and Justice for All.”

Despite the approval, the project faces opposition. A group of Vietnam War veterans filed a lawsuit in February, arguing that the construction lacks necessary congressional approval and would disrespect those buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Attorney Wendy Liu, representing the veterans, stated, “The thought of being buried in the shadow of what they have described as a vainglorious arch is profoundly disrespectful.”

The White House maintains that the arch will commemorate the nation’s history, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the monument’s role in enhancing the visitor experience at Arlington National Cemetery and honoring American heroes.

While the Commission of Fine Arts has approved the design, further federal approvals are required before construction can begin. The lawsuit by the Vietnam veterans remains ongoing, and the project’s future is uncertain.
