Memorial Day Weekend Travel Upended By Severe Weather Forecast

Memorial Day weekend travelers are facing potential disruptions as storms threaten to bring heavy rain, flash flooding, and travel delays from Texas to the Northeast. The weather already impacted air travel early Thursday morning (May 21), with nearly 2,000 flights delayed and over 300 cancellations across the United States by 11 a.m. ET, according to Flightaware.com.

In Texas, severe storms have led to flash flood warnings and school closures. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport reported nearly 150 flight cancellations or delays on Wednesday. The National Weather Service predicts 1 to 5 inches of rain in North Texas through Friday, increasing the risk of isolated flooding.

In New York, LaGuardia Airport experienced significant delays after a sinkhole was discovered near a runway on Wednesday. The runway is expected to reopen Thursday morning, but travelers are advised to check with airlines for the latest updates. The Port Authority is actively working to ensure safety and minimize further disruptions.

Despite the weather challenges, AAA anticipates a record-breaking 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles during the holiday weekend. This figure slightly surpasses last year’s numbers, indicating strong travel demand despite higher fuel prices. AAA advises travelers to plan ahead, especially those flying in and out of major hubs like Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta, where weather conditions may cause further delays.

As the weekend progresses, travelers should remain vigilant about weather updates to ensure safe and smooth journeys.
