Trump Gives Reasons For Republicans’ Election Night Losses

President Donald Trump said he believes the ongoing U.S. government shutdown led to Republicans’ sweeping losses in major races during Election Night on Tuesday (November 4).

“Last night it was not expected to be a victory,” Trump said during a breakfast event with Republican Senators, adding that, “I don’t think it was good for Republicans,” via FOX News.

“I don’t think it was good — I’m not sure it was good for anybody. But we had an interesting evening and we learned a lot,” he continued.

“Exactly one year ago we had that big, beautiful victory,” Trump added, referring to his own presidential election win, as well as Republicans retaining the House and claiming the Senate in 2024. “But I thought we’d have a discussion after the press leaves about what last night represented and what we should do about it. And also about the shutdown and how that relates to last night,” Trump added.

“I think if you read the pollsters, the shutdown was a big factor. Negative for the Republicans, and that was a big factor,” he continued. “And they say that I wasn’t on the ballot was the biggest factor. But I don’t know about that. But I was honored that they said that.”

Democrats swept major elections along the East Coast with former Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Rep. Mikie Sherrill winning the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections, respectively; Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayoral election; Jay Jones winning the Virginia attorney general election; and Ghazala Hashmi winning the lieutenant governor election. Additionally, Proposition 50, which called for a new congressional map that could help Democrats win five more House seats, passed with 63.8% support in California.
