Former President Donald Trump claimed that the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, would turn the United States of America “communist immediately.”
“There’s never been a ticket like this,” Trump said while calling into FOX News‘ morning show FOX & Friends on Wednesday (August 7). “This is a ticket that would want this country to go communist immediately, if not sooner.”
Trump, 78, then claimed he was “thrilled” by Harris’ decision to name Walz as her running mate on Tuesday (August 6).
“He’s a very, very liberal man,” Trump said. “He’s a shocking pick and I’m thrilled. I could not be more thrilled.”
“If you look at his record — with no walls, no security, let everybody in — he’s worse than they are. You know, nobody knew how radical left she was, but he’s a smarter version of her,” Trump added, referring to Harris before comparing both candidates to progressive United States Sen. Bernie Sanders. “If you want to know the truth, he’s probably about the same as Bernie Sanders. He’s probably more so than Bernie Sanders. She is more so than Bernie Sanders. That’s got to be your guide, Bernie Sanders, and that’s not a great guide.”
Harris was reported to have also considered Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as options for her running mate. The vice president secured enough delegates needed to win the nomination and has no credible challenger for the Democratic nomination, having been endorsed by several top officials within the Democratic party including President Joe Biden, who said he wanted to “offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year” in a post shared on his social media accounts.
“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said in a statement obtained by Variety. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
Biden announced his decision to end his campaign in a letter to Americans shared on his social media accounts Sunday afternoon. The president’s decision came amid reports of uncertainty regarding his re-election campaign following a disastrous performance in the first presidential debate against Trump in June.
