Tillis Criticizes Pulte’s Nomination for DNI Role

Republican Senator Thom Tillis has voiced strong opposition to the nomination of Bill Pulte as the next director of national intelligence (DNI), suggesting that Pulte has little chance of being confirmed by the Senate. Tillis described Pulte as an “incendiary attack dog” and questioned his qualifications for the role. Pulte, who currently serves as the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, lacks experience in intelligence roles. Despite this, President Trump has appointed him to serve as acting DNI while maintaining his current positions.

According to The Hill, several Republican senators have expressed bewilderment at Trump’s decision, citing Pulte’s lack of national security credentials. Senator John Cornyn of Texas, a senior member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, stated, “I see no evidence of any qualifications for that job.” Similarly, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana remarked that Pulte doesn’t appear qualified to serve as the president’s principal adviser on national security matters.

PBS NewsHour reports that Senate Democratic leaders have also criticized the nomination, with Senator Mark Warner of Virginia calling it a “terrible choice.” Warner expressed concerns that Pulte’s appointment would prioritize loyalty to President Trump over objective intelligence analysis.

Pulte’s controversial tenure at the FHFA has included efforts to investigate alleged mortgage fraud by political adversaries of President Trump, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Adam Schiff. These actions have drawn criticism from both political parties.

As reported by Politico, Pulte’s nomination is expected to face significant challenges in the Senate. If formally nominated, he would need Senate confirmation to hold the position permanently. Until then, he will serve as acting DNI, a role that does not require immediate Senate approval.
