An officer with the New York City Police Department shot an 18-year-old driver on Sunday (June 21) in the Bronx after the suspect, behind the wheel of a stolen Kia Sportage, struck multiple officers during an attempted escape. The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. on East Fordham Road as police tracked the vehicle, which had been reported stolen from the Bronx the day before, using license plate reader technology.
Police surrounded the silver SUV after it pulled over and ordered the three people inside to exit. Authorities say the driver refused, instead moving the car back and forth and striking a police sergeant as well as several other officers, before driving forward and hitting another officer. All injured officers were taken to local hospitals and have since been released, except for the sergeant, who remained hospitalized overnight for observation. All are expected to recover.
As the confrontation escalated, an officer climbed onto the hood of the Kia and fired a single shot, striking the driver in the arm. The 18-year-old was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital and remains in stable condition and in police custody. A passenger from the vehicle is also in custody, while officers continue to search for a third person who fled the scene before the incident intensified.
Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North, explained at a news briefing that “the incident was captured on body-worn camera footage and is being investigated by the Force Investigation Division.” The division is now reviewing the officer-involved shooting.
Police confirmed that the driver had previously been arrested in February in connection with a shooting in the same precinct and faces multiple felony charges. Additional charges related to Sunday’s events are pending.
The investigation into the shooting and the actions of all involved continues.
