Senate GOP Drops White House Ballroom Funding

Senate Republicans have removed funding for President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom security from a comprehensive immigration package. The decision, announced on Wednesday (June 3), follows the Senate’s official rule-keeper’s determination that the funding violated specific budgetary rules. The ballroom funding, which amounted to $1 billion, was initially included in the package to enhance security features at the White House complex.

President Trump defended the ballroom project, describing it as a “gift” to the nation. He emphasized the importance of the security enhancements, stating that the ballroom would be paid for with private funds, while public money would cover security measures. However, the removal of the funding was attributed to parliamentary rules rather than political pressure, according to the White House.

The ballroom funding had sparked significant debate among lawmakers, with some Republicans expressing frustration over the inclusion of the funding in the immigration package. Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged the complexity added by the ballroom funding, which led to its removal. The decision to drop the funding was made amid growing tensions within the GOP, as some members voiced concerns over Trump’s administration’s $1.8 billion settlement fund and its potential use.

The ballroom project, part of a broader security upgrade plan for the White House, faced criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans. Democrats argued that the funding was a distraction from more pressing issues, such as affordability concerns faced by American families. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Republicans for prioritizing the ballroom project over addressing economic challenges.

Despite the removal of the ballroom funding, the immigration package continues to face hurdles. The package, intended to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, has been delayed due to disagreements over the settlement fund and other provisions. The Senate is expected to revisit the package after the Memorial Day recess.
