A record snowfall was reported at Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday (July 14), despite temperatures reaching up to 94 degrees, FOX 29 reports.
Thunderstorms in the area produced small hail, which is frozen precipitation and counts as a “trace” of snow, according to the National Weather Service’s Philadelphia/Mount Holly branch.
“Here’s a win for #TeamSnow. Thunderstorms passed over Philadelphia Intl. Airport Sunday afternoon and produced small hail. Since hail is frozen precipitation, this counts as a ‘trace’ of snow in our climate reports. Hence, the record daily snowfall report,” the agency wrote on its Facebook account.
The National Weather Service included a list of previous times that a trace of snow was recorded at Philadelphia International Airport during the summer months, which includes the following dates:

The latest snowfall breaks a record originally set in 1870, according to FOX 29.
“While rare, it is not unusual,” the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly branch wrote in the caption of its Facebook post.
