An alleged rape and strangulation reported at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), has left the campus community in shock.
On Sunday UCSB students received an alert about the incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. on campus property. According to the UCSB Police Department, the suspect and victim met earlier that evening at a party in Isla Vista, a nearby college town, and were not previously acquainted.
The UCSB Police Department is actively investigating the case but has not released any suspect information. They are urging anyone with information to contact them or submit tips anonymously. The incident has heightened concerns among students, with some expressing fears about safety in Isla Vista, known for its vibrant social scene.
In response, UCSB has made resources available for those affected by the news. Jamie File, a senior advocate with Campus Advocacy Resources and Education, emphasized the importance of support for survivors and encouraged students to use the school’s 24-hour confidential support line. The university’s CARE program offers free and confidential support to those impacted by sexual violence.
This incident is not isolated, as UCSB has seen a rise in campus crime rates since 2022, including reports of rape, dating violence, and stalking. The university says it is committed to addressing these issues and ensuring the safety of its community.
