Popular Convenience Store To Close 645 Locations Amid Massive Makeover

7-Eleven plans to close more than 600 stores during the 2026 fiscal year, the New York Post reports.

The popular convenience store chain will shutter 645 locations between March 1, 2026 and February 28, 2027, as part of massive overhaul that will ultimately lead to long-term expansion. The company plans to revamp from its corner store presence to a more fast-casual pit stop with a new “food-forward” focus on prepared meals, drinks and an upgraded overall experience.

“These food-forward stores are resonating with our customers and driving [average sales per store day] about 18% higher than our system average,” 7-Eleven President Stan Reynolds said during the company’s fiscal Q4 earnings call. “We’ll continue learning from these stores and refine our new store standard to meet the needs of consumers both now and in the future.”

The redesigned locations will feature more food and beverage options, with specific locations taking on a “wholesale fuel stores” approach that won’t count to the company’s official total number of locations. 7-Eleven said the closures will be part of a “portfolio optimization” as it aims to cut underperforming locations.

The company had already closed more than 600 locations between 2024 and 2025, which included nearly 450 in North America, according to an earlier report from the New York Post. 7-Eleven has struggled as cigarette sales, a key factor in convenience store profits, have dropped 26% since 2019, coinciding with less foot traffic and inflation rising.
