In a tragic incident at the Islamic Center of San Diego, five people, including two suspects, were found dead following a shooting on Sunday (May 17). According to San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl, the suspects, aged 17 and 19, appeared to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The three adult victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting occurred at a location that houses a pre-K through third-grade Islamic school. Chief Wahl described the event as a community’s worst nightmare and assured residents that there is no ongoing threat. The FBI is also involved in the investigation to determine the motives behind the attack.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the Muslim community. This incident follows a previous act of vandalism at the mosque in October 2023, when flyers and blue rags resembling the flag of Israel were found on the property. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) had called for an investigation into that incident, citing heightened fear and concern among mosque attendees.
The San Diego Police Department continues to investigate the shooting as a possible hate crime, with support from CAIR and the Muslim Leadership Council of San Diego. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
