Poison Control Calls Increase During Halloween Because Of Glow Sticks

This Halloween season, poison control centers across the United States are witnessing a significant increase in calls related to glow products, such as glow sticks and glow jewelry. According to data from America’s Poison Centers, which accredits and represents 53 poison centers nationwide, the number of calls concerning glow products jumps from an average of 20 on a typical day to approximately 260 on Halloween.

Experts warn that the liquid inside glow sticks can cause irritation if it leaks onto the skin, mouth, or eyes. Symptoms of exposure include stinging eyes, upset stomach, and a burning sensation in the mouth or throat. If a child comes into contact with the liquid, it is advised to rinse the affected area immediately with water. For ingestion, giving water and small snacks can help alleviate the taste and upset stomach, as noted by The Poison Control Center at CHOP.

Despite the alarming number of calls, the liquid in glow sticks is generally non-toxic, and most cases do not require medical attention. However, if a child experiences choking or difficulty breathing, immediate medical help should be sought by calling 911. Parents are advised to keep glow products away from young children and remind them not to chew on glow sticks or jewelry.
