The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall notice for certain pet food products from Answers Pet Food and Darwin’s Natural Pet Products due to potential contamination with salmonella and listeria bacteria. The recall was initiated after the FDA discovered the presence of these bacteria during sample testing.
The affected brands include Answers Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, Answers Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and Answers Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs, all produced by Lystn LLC, the owner of Answers Pet Food. The company has voluntarily recalled these products “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the FDA notice. The products were sold in 4 lb. half-gallon cartons both online and in retail stores.
The FDA has urged Arrow Alliance, the maker of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, to issue an official recall, though the company has yet to do so. No illnesses have been confirmed to date.
Both salmonella and listeria can cause severe illness in animals and humans. Pets infected with these bacteria can show symptoms like lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets might only display a reduced appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Even if they appear healthy, infected pets can still carry the bacteria and spread it to other animals or humans.
Consumers are advised to dispose of any of the recalled food securely and sanitize any surfaces that have come into contact with the products.
Consumers can request a refund by emailing a copy of the receipt and pictures of the product to info@answerspetfood.com along with the retailer’s information. If you have additional questions or concerns, you can contact ANSWERS’ Pet Food at info@answerspetfood.com.
