Paramount Considers Leaving California Amid Warner Bros. Rift

Paramount Pictures is contemplating relocating its headquarters from California due to the state’s opposition to its proposed $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery.

David Ellison, Paramount’s CEO, is reportedly being urged by his advisers to consider moving the company’s base and redirecting $30 billion in planned spending outside California if Attorney General Rob Bonta files a lawsuit to block the merger.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the merger, which has already received approval from the Justice Department, faces potential legal challenges from several states, including New York and Washington. These states argue that the merger could harm competition for major films. Despite these concerns, Paramount argues that the merger will enhance competition against tech giants like Netflix and Amazon.

NBC News reports that the merger would consolidate two historic film studios and streaming platforms, potentially affecting jobs and consumer costs. More than 5,500 industry professionals have opposed the merger, fearing it will reduce content buyers and increase production costs.

While the possibility of relocating remains, Ellison has yet to make a final decision. Paramount has already secured a significant studio space in New Jersey, which could serve as a new headquarters if the company decides to leave California. The merger is set to close in the third quarter of 2026, with Paramount confident in its legal position and ongoing engagement with regulators worldwide.
