Operation Firewall: 341 Arrested, 40 Children Rescued in SoCal

A major child exploitation crackdown, known as “Operation Firewall,” led to 341 arrests and the rescue or identification of 40 children across five Southern California counties.

The operation, conducted from April 19 to May 3, was spearheaded by the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which includes 112 law enforcement agencies. The task force focused on internet-facilitated offenses such as child pornography, grooming, and human trafficking.

During the operation, authorities conducted undercover investigations on social media platforms and executed numerous search and arrest warrants. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the suspects faced charges including production and distribution of child sexual abuse material, lewd acts with a child, and human trafficking. The operation also uncovered over 150,000 illicit images.

At a press conference, law enforcement officials emphasized the growing threat of online grooming and exploitation. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities, stating, “Get your kids off the internet. Nothing good comes from it.”

The task force’s efforts were supported by advanced technology to identify and apprehend suspects. Authorities also highlighted the role of the “764” group, an online network targeting minors for self-harm and explicit content. Many rescued children have been reunited with their families or placed under the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

Despite the operation’s conclusion, the LA ICAC Task Force will continue its mission to protect children from online predators. Officials encouraged the community to report potential child sexual abuse activity and visit resources like NetSmartz for internet safety tips.
