New California Laws Taking Effect July 1, 2026

On July 1, several new laws will take effect in California, impacting various sectors across the state.

Among the most significant changes is the introduction of new regulations targeting autonomous vehicles, school cell phone bans, standardized food labeling, and high-density housing near transit.

One of the key laws, Assembly Bill 1777, allows law enforcement to ticket autonomous vehicles for traffic violations. This law requires autonomous vehicle companies to provide a 24/7 emergency hotline for first responders and to equip vehicles with two-way communication systems.

In education, Assembly Bill 3216, also known as the Phone-Free Schools Act, mandates that all public school districts and charter schools implement policies to limit or prohibit student smartphone use during school hours. This aims to reduce distractions and improve student mental health. Additionally, Senate Bill 760 requires schools to provide at least one all-gender restroom for students, promoting inclusivity and safety for LGBTQ+ students.

Food labeling will also see changes with Assembly Bill 660, which standardizes date labels on packaged foods to reduce waste. The law eliminates confusing “sell-by” dates, replacing them with “BEST if Used by” for quality and “USE by” for safety. Senate Bill 68, the Allergen Disclosure for Dining Experiences Act, requires chain restaurants to disclose major food allergens on their menus.

Housing development is addressed in Senate Bill 79, which overrides local zoning laws to allow high-density housing near major transit stops. This measure aims to increase affordable housing options and reduce reliance on cars.
