Mom of Toddler Who Died in Hot Car Booked for Alleged Manslaughter, Neglect

ANAHEIM (CNS) – The mother of a 3-year-old girl who died while locked in a car with her during the heat wave in Anaheim was booked Monday on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child neglect.

Sandra Hernandez, 41, of Anaheim, was booked after she was released from a hospital, Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter said.

The victim was identified as 3-year-old Ily Ruiz of Anaheim, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Anaheim officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of North Fashion Lane about 4:20 p.m. Friday regarding the emergency, according to Sutter.

Hernandez and her daughter had been inside a Ford Expedition for an unknown amount of time, Sutter said. A family member who found them locked in while temperatures were about 104 degrees had to smash a window to rescue the girl, Sutter said.. It would have been a great deal hotter in the vehicle, Sutter added.

Police found multiple empty alcohol bottles in the vehicle, Sutter said.
