A late-night U.S. military training exercise disrupted the peace in a Pasadena neighborhood with flash bangs and simulated gunfire into the early hours of Thursday.
Residents near the former Saint Luke’s Hospital on East Washington Boulevard experienced the loud sounds as part of an urban warfare training exercise.
Pasadena Councilman Rick Cole shared videos of the scene, noting the impact on residents living directly across the street. “It’s 2 a.m. and we’ve just been treated to 45 minutes of simulated gunfire and flash bang grenades,” he said, highlighting the noise from helicopters coming and going. According to Pasadena Star News, the exercise began around 8 p.m. and was expected to continue until 1 a.m.
The Pasadena Police Department assisted in maintaining safety by keeping pedestrians and vehicles away from the area. City spokesperson Lisa Derderian mentioned that such exercises are part of the military’s regular training routine. However, Cole expressed frustration, stating that the city was informed of the exercise only on the day it occurred and instructed not to release information until 5:30 p.m.
Residents with concerns were advised to contact the Pasadena Police Department. The training was not open to the public or media, according to Pasadena Now. Similar exercises were conducted in Irvine, with military officials scheduled to begin their activities around 8 p.m.
