LONG BEACH (CNS) – Authorities Tuesday are investigating the cause of an explosion inside an accessory dwelling unit that destroyed a residential property in Long Beach and severely injured a man in his 30s.
Firefighters were sent to the 2800 block of Gale Avenue about 11 a.m. Monday, according to the Long Beach police and fire departments.
The blast destroyed the accessory unit behind the main property, Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Brian Fisk told the Long Beach Post. The front building sustained minor damage.
NBC 4 reported the back structure did not have a valid permit and city officials had ordered the owner to demolish the accessory unit within 48 hours or face emergency action.
Crews put out several small fires on the property and took one person to a trauma center for treatment of burn injuries.
Several properties were also damaged, NBC 4 reported.
A fire official initially told the Post that the blast was likely related to a gas leak from an appliance on the property. Fisk told City News Service early Monday afternoon, however, that the cause of the blast remained under investigation.
Around 1,900 utility customers were left without power in the area following the explosion. As of early Monday afternoon, most of the power had been restored.
