L.A. Mobilizes to Feed Families as Federal Shutdown Halts CalFresh Benefits

With food assistance paused for millions across California due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, local leaders and organizations are stepping in to fill the gap.

Two federal judges ruled Friday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture must use billions in emergency funds to restart federal food aid. Still, they gave the agency until Monday to decide how to proceed, leaving many families unsure when help will arrive.

The delay impacts nearly 1.5 million people in Los Angeles County and over 310,000 in Orange County who rely on CalFresh, the state’s version of SNAP benefits.

In response, L.A. County is partnering with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to boost supplies at its 940 food pantries and host large-scale grocery giveaways throughout November. Supervisor Janice Hahn announced four major food distribution events beginning Nov. 8 in Pico Rivera, followed by others in San Pedro, Long Beach, and Hawaiian Gardens.

Mayor Karen Bass also unveiled citywide support efforts, including FamilySource Centers offering weekly food distributions, senior meal programs through the Department of Aging, and continued food service at LAUSD schools.

L.A. Care Health Plan is contributing $5.4 million to support local food programs, while county departments have added $14 million to expand distribution capacity.

“While the court’s decision offers hope, families won’t see immediate relief,” said County Board Chair Kathryn Barger. “We’re doing everything possible to ensure no one in Los Angeles goes hungry.”
