Four candidates for the Los Angeles mayoral race participated in a forum on Wednesday at Los Angeles Valley College’s Monarch Hall.
The event, hosted by the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce, featured incumbent Karen Bass, Councilmember Nithya Raman, tech entrepreneur Adam Miller, and community advocate Rae Huang. Each candidate had 20 minutes to address key issues such as homelessness, affordable housing, and policing.
Mayor Bass defended her “Inside Safe” program, emphasizing the need for quicker transitions to permanent housing. Meanwhile, Huang proposed firing the police chief, Miller suggested doubling patrols, and Raman advocated for unarmed crisis responders. The candidates also discussed economic revitalization, particularly in Hollywood.
Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who did not attend the forum, hosted a block party in South Los Angeles. Pratt, known for his viral campaign videos, received attention after President Donald Trump commented on his candidacy, calling him “a character” and speculating on his support for the MAGA movement.
The mayoral primary election is set for June 2, with Bass, Pratt, and Raman leading in polls. Bass, facing scrutiny over her handling of the Palisades wildfire and a financial crisis, may face a runoff if no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote. Los Angeles’ political dynamics and election strategies, such as boosting Pratt’s profile to edge out serious contenders, add complexity to the race.
