Macy’s announced the first set of 150 underperforming stores it plans to close in the coming years. The company said that it will shutter 66 stores across 22 states, with a majority of the closures happening during the first quarter of 2025.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., said in a press release.
The closures come as retail stores across the country continue to struggle heading into 2025. Party City, which recently filed for bankruptcy, suddenly announced it was closing all of its stores across the country. Sears, which was once a staple at shopping malls nationwide, now has just eight stores left after closing another location in December.
Just before the end of 2024, GameStop announced they plan to close hundreds of stores throughout 2025.
