Former President Donald Trump brought up purported claims that migrants are eating people’s pets during his first presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
While the two candidates were discussing immigration, Trump brought up disputed claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were kidnapping cats and dogs and then eating them.
“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” Trump said.
After Trump’s comments, Muir noted that officials in Springfield have denied the allegations that immigrants were kidnapping and eating peoples’ pets.
“Additionally, there have been no verified instances of immigrants engaging in illegal activities such as squatting or littering in front of residents’ homes. Furthermore, no reports have been made regarding members of the immigrant community deliberately disrupting traffic,” a city spokesperson told the news outlet.
