Democratic Socialist Unseats Incumbent In CO Democratic Senate Primary

In a significant political shift, 29-year-old Melat Kiros, a democratic socialist, defeated 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette in Colorado’s Democratic primary for the 1st Congressional District on Tuesday (June 30). Kiros’s victory marks the third upset by a democratic socialist in a competitive House primary this election cycle.

Kiros, who was born in Ethiopia and moved to the United States as a child, campaigned on a platform of generational change and reducing corporate influence in politics. She received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America and Justice Democrats, which helped bolster her campaign. Kiros criticized DeGette’s acceptance of campaign funds from corporate PACs, arguing that it contradicted her progressive stances.

The district, centered around Denver, is heavily Democratic, making Kiros’s victory in the primary a strong indicator of her success in the upcoming general election. According to The Guardian, Kiros’s campaign focused on issues like universal health care, child care, and elder care, resonating with voters seeking more aggressive leadership.

In another notable race, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated U.S. Senator Michael Bennet in the Democratic primary for governor. Weiser positioned himself to the left of Bennet, who had been polling strongly until recent weeks. Weiser’s campaign highlighted his legal battles against opioid producers and consumer fraud, which resonated with voters looking for a strong stance against corporate malpractice.

These results reflect a growing trend among Democratic voters favoring younger, more progressive candidates willing to challenge the party’s establishment. The primary victories in Colorado add to the momentum of the democratic socialist movement, which has seen similar successes in New York and other parts of the country.
