CA Jury Orders Chris Brown To Pay Housekeeper $13M Over Dog Attack

A Los Angeles jury has ordered singer Chris Brown to pay nearly $13 million in damages to his former housekeeper, Maria Avila, after she was attacked by his dog in 2020. The verdict, announced Tuesday (June 30), concluded a two-week trial that found Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, liable for negligence.

The incident occurred at Brown’s home in Tarzana, California, where Avila was mauled by Hades, a 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd, while she was taking out the trash. Avila suffered severe injuries, including facial and arm scarring, and has been unable to return to work due to limited mobility and post-traumatic stress. Her sister, Patricia Avila, who was present during the attack, was awarded $885,000 for emotional distress, while Maria’s husband, Oscar Olivo, received $50,000.

During the trial, Brown argued that the dog was kept for security purposes and claimed he had warned the housekeepers not to go outside without security. However, the housekeepers denied receiving such a warning, citing language barriers. Testimony revealed that Brown left the scene after the attack, fearing media attention.

Maria Avila’s attorney, Michael C. Murphy Jr., expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating, “We are thrilled that we were able to get justice for our client.” The verdict comes as Brown embarks on a co-headlining stadium tour with Usher across the United States.
