The sudden death of 19-year-old Walmart employee Gursimran Kaur, whose body was found in a walk-in oven at a store in Halifax, Canada, last month, has been ruled as not suspicious by the Halifax Regional Police. The police responded to a report of a sudden death at the Walmart store on Mumford Rd. on the evening of October 19, where they found Kaur deceased in the oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.
Authorities said that investigators conducted several interviews, reviewed video footage, and worked closely with the Nova Scotia Department of Labor and the medical examiner service.
“The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious, and there is no evidence of foul play,” the Halifax Regional Police said in a statement.
Kaur and her mother, both originally from India, had worked at the store for two years. On the evening of Kaur’s death, her mother began searching for her after not seeing her for an hour. She asked around and tried to call her but to no avail. The Maritime Sikh Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which launched a fundraiser on behalf of the family last month, said Kaur’s mother discovered her daughter in the oven.
The Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills, and Immigration issued a stop-work order on October 22 for Walmart’s bakery and a piece of equipment at the store. That order was lifted on October 28 “after the oven was assessed and determined to have been operating as per the manufacturer’s requirements.”
The department has now assumed the lead in the ongoing workplace investigation.
