CHP Catches Pomona Murder Suspect After Pursuit

POMONA (CNS) – A double murder suspect was captured after leading police on a nearly two-hour chase that began in Pomona, continued through Kern County then back into Los Angeles County in the Antelope Valley, authorities said Friday.

The California Highway Patrol’s Crime Suppression Team was supporting the Pomona Police Department with saturation patrols within Pomona when the police began broadcasting a shots-fired call with multiple individuals injured around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. All available CST units responded to assist with a perimeter, including the CHP airplane requested to provide aerial support, said CHP Chief Chris Margaris.

A man a woman were pronounced dead, the Pomona PD stated.

The CHP teams chased the suspect into the Newhall Area, where officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect failed to yield and a pursuit ensued just before 5:30 p.m., Margaris added.

Driving a black Kia sedan, the suspect was captured via aerial footage on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway near Roxford Street. The pursuit traveled into Kern for 1 1/2  hours from the Newhall,  Fort Tejon and Antelope Valley areas.

CHP Antelope Valley units successfully deployed a spike strip and used a pursuit intervention technique to stop the vehicle. The suspect was safely taken into custody around 7:10 p.m. Thursday.

“A double murder suspect was swiftly taken into custody today because of our partnership with Pomona Police Department, the quick thinking of our CHP Crime Suppression Team, our CHP airplane, the IRIS unit, and, ultimately, the collaboration between all of our patrol units on the ground in the pursuit, who were able to take the suspect into custody safely,” said Margaris.

After the suspect was arrested, the CHP transferred custody of the individual to Pomona police.
