Chino To Deploy Drones To Catch Illegal Fireworks Users

As Independence Day approaches, authorities in Chino are taking steps to curb illegal fireworks.

The Chino Police Department announced that multiple drones will be deployed on the Fourth of July to identify individuals setting off illegal fireworks. This initiative is part of a broader enforcement effort aimed at reducing dangerous fireworks activity in the city.

Last year, the department tested the program with a single drone. This year, several drones will be in the air, supported by 65 officers focusing on fireworks enforcement. Lt. Michael Johnson of the Chino Police Department explained that each drone is operated by a team consisting of an observer and a pilot. The drones are equipped to zoom in and capture footage, helping officers identify where fireworks are being launched and who is responsible.

During last year’s pilot program, video footage revealed multiple instances of illegal fireworks use, leading to 18 citations. Violators faced fines of $1,000. The department typically handles about 500 calls for service on Independence Day, with a significant number related to fireworks.

Chino is not alone in its efforts to increase enforcement. In nearby San Bernardino, city officials will also use drones for fireworks enforcement for the first time this year. San Bernardino has adopted an ordinance holding property owners, renters, and social hosts responsible for illegal fireworks activity on their property.

Chino has a similar ordinance in place, and officials urge residents to celebrate responsibly and adhere to local fireworks regulations. According to KTLA, the use of illegal fireworks is considered a misdemeanor in California, and violators can face fines and legal action.

The Chino Police Department encourages residents to report illegal fireworks by providing detailed information to the authorities. As the holiday approaches, both fire agencies and law enforcement are preparing for one of the busiest nights of the year.
