CA Democrats Criticize Trump Plan For 100% Tariff on Foreign-Made Movies

President Donald Trump announced on Monday via a Truth Social post that he intends to impose a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the United States. This move marks the first time President Trump has aimed a tariff at a service rather than a physical good. However, he did not specify when or how this tariff would be implemented.

The announcement follows a similar threat made in May, where President Trump argued that foreign tax incentives have lured filmmakers away from the U.S. In his post, he criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, describing him as “weak and incompetent,” and highlighted the significant impact on Hollywood. According to KTLA, President Trump stated, “Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby.'”

The proposed tariff has raised concerns within the film industry, with some insiders questioning its feasibility and potential enforcement challenges. As reported by KCRA, industry experts have noted that American actors and directors generally prefer working domestically, but the lower costs and incentives abroad make overseas production attractive.

California Democrats have criticized the proposed tariff, warning that it could lead to higher costs for U.S. consumers. The Hill reported that the tariff’s specifics, including how the administration would calculate the value of a film or apply the directive to movies partially filmed overseas, remain unclear.
