Big Bear Eagles Jackie and Shadow Signal Start of ‘Stick Season’

At Big Bear Lake, the famous bald eagle duo, Jackie and Shadow, have signaled the start of ‘Stick Season’ with a recent nest visit. On September 23, Shadow was spotted at their nest, raising hopes among fans for a new breeding season. This period, known as ‘Stick Season,’ is when the eagles prepare their nest with sticks, pinecones, and fluff before the winter months arrive. According to NBC Los Angeles, this nest preparation is crucial for cushioning and holding any eggs during incubation.

Jackie and Shadow have become local celebrities, with their nest monitored by a camera operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit organization. The pair has returned to the nest over several years, with past eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, delighting viewers worldwide.

In a promising development, Jackie laid her first egg of 2025 on Wednesday night, as reported by ABC7. The eagles will now take turns incubating the egg, hoping for a successful hatch. Last year, Jackie laid three eggs, but none hatched. Despite this, the eagles remain committed to their nest, often seen playfully bickering as they strengthen it with sticks.

Fans eagerly await the outcome of this year’s nesting season, with hopes high for a new eaglet to join the Big Bear family.
