An Amazon delivery driver has been charged with vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death after allegedly striking and killing a 79-year-old woman in Georgia. The victim, Sandra Fitts, was found dead near Cumming Highway and Jordan Lane on Tuesday evening.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Fitts and her husband had recently sold their home in the area but continued to visit a nearby cemetery where family members were buried. On the day of the incident, Fitts was reportedly visiting the cemetery and feeding some wild cats.
Evidence at the scene led officials to believe that an Amazon delivery truck was involved in the incident. A deputy spotted an Amazon truck with matching damage while responding to the accident and called for assistance to locate it.
The driver, 24-year-old London Best, was subsequently arrested.
“It appears that he knows what happened, and he actually continued to deliver packages in the area,” said Captain Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
In response to the incident, an Amazon spokesperson stated that Best is currently not allowed to deliver on the company’s behalf.
“We’re deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. We’ll support local police as they investigate,” the company wrote to WANF.
