United States citizen Amir Amiry was released from Afghanistan custody after being wrongfully detained, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in a statement obtained by ABC News on Sunday (September 28).
Amiry is the fifth American citizen released from Afghanistan detention in 2025, however, his case wasn’t previously known to the public prior to Rubio’s statement on Sunday. The secretary of state credited President Donald Trump for his leadership and commitment, while also crediting Qatar officials for their assistance in getting Amiry released.
“Today, thanks to President Trump’s leadership and commitment to the American people, the United States welcomes home U.S. citizen Amir Amiry who was wrongfully detained in Afghanistan. We express our sincere gratitude to Qatar, whose strong partnership and tireless diplomatic efforts were vital to securing his release,” Rubio said via ABC News.
Rubio confirmed that there were still other Americans “unjustly detained” in Afghanistan and vowed that Trump “won’t rest” until all are returned to the United States. State Department officials said they hope an executive order signed by the president earlier this year would stop other nations from wrongfully detaining Americans abroad and assist in securing the release of those who have been wrongfully detained overseas.
The executive order authorizes robust responses against foreign governments engaging in practices to wrongfully detain U.S. nationals.
