Wild Videos Show Pools Empty As Cruise Ship Is Battered By High Winds

A Princess Cruises ship encountered severe weather in Fiordland, New Zealand, last week, resulting in a dramatic tilt that injured 16 passengers. The incident occurred when the Crown Princess was hit by strong winds, causing it to tilt beyond its usual movement before stabilizing. According to a statement from Princess Cruises, the crew responded quickly, ensuring the safety of the ship was never compromised.

Passenger Martin Wise, who was on board during the event, described the experience to New Zealand publication Stuff. He said the ship tilted about 14 degrees due to 75-knot winds, which are approximately 86 miles per hour. Wise reported that cups, glasses, and plates went flying in the dining room, and the incident lasted around 40 seconds.

“On a frightening scale, I’d put it at 8.5 to 10,” Wise said. “This is our seventh Princess cruise and nothing’s ever happened like this before.”

Despite the frightening experience, Wise, who has been on seven Princess cruises, stated it would not deter him from future cruises.

A video shared on social media showed water from the Lido Deck pool spilling into the Horizons food court, although the area was quickly cleaned and reopened. A second video showed food and kitchenware spilling across the kitchen floor

Princess Cruises confirmed there was no structural damage to the ship. The Crown Princess, which can accommodate 3,090 guests, continued its journey after the incident.
