Pete Hegseth Grilled By Senators At Defense Secretary Confirmation Hearing

Pete Hegseth, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for defense secretary, faced intense scrutiny during his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday (January 14). Senators questioned Hegseth on various issues, including his stance on Ukraine, allegations of sexual assault, and his views on women in combat roles

Hegseth faced multiple questions about his past conduct. Senator Tim Kaine probed into a sexual assault allegation against Hegseth, which he denied, stating he was “completely cleared.” Hegseth admitted to a settlement with the accuser but maintained his innocence. Senator Mazie Hirono questioned Hegseth’s fitness to serve, citing allegations of excessive drinking, which Hegseth denied, promising to abstain from alcohol if confirmed.

Hegseth’s views on women in combat roles were also challenged. He stated that women would have access to combat roles if standards remained high. However, his past comments against women in combat drew criticism from senators like Kirsten Gillibrand and Tammy Duckworth.

During the hearing, Senator Angus King expressed concern that Hegseth did not mention Ukraine or Russia in his opening statement. Hegseth responded that ending the conflict is a presidential decision, and he would support efforts to resolve it. He emphasized that the Department of Defense would play a key role in supporting the President’s Special Envoy for Ukraine-Russia if confirmed.

Despite the controversies, Hegseth has support from some GOP senators and veterans’ groups. His nomination is part of a broader effort by the Republican-led Senate to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks swiftly.
